Cross Country
03:44

I started off too fast of course
Smoke free lungs
An elemental force
I couldn’t help myself
I wanted to look good in front of everybody else
But even before we had finished a lap
I’d slotted into my place at the back
With all the fat gets
And the kids who just walked and talked
But they didn’t talk to me
We all new our place
Cross Country
No one had to be told
It was right in your face when you were five years old
And the teacher said “Take your time Paul”
He was being sarcastic
That’s not what he wanted at all
He made it clear when he said do another lap
So I set off on my own
I’ve been on my own since
A corporate rebel
A bit like Prince
I know what they expect from me
A knowing smirk about a cross country
So I do my bit
And I pretend that I’m enjoying it
When I should pretend that I’ve lost my breath
Or that I’ve got a stitch
Like the rabbit you forgot to feed
And you were to scared to go back to the cage
When you remembered
So you sent your dad
He said it wasn’t that bad
But he was lying
Well we’re still here
We’re what you fear
We’re what you could be
Cross country
I’ve not run since
Look at me for the evidence
I’ll just stroll and see for myself
What happens cross country
I don’t mind if you follow me
We’ll take a trip cross country
And see the sights
Oh wait, are you scared to go out at night?
Well what papers do you read?
Do you read the one about cross country?
With the forthright views
And the letters page
That lets you know what to do
Like the rabbit you forgot to feed
And you were to scared to go back to the cage
When you remembered
So you sent your dad
He said it wasn’t that bad
But he was lying
Well we’re still here
We’re what you fear
We’re what you could be
Cross country
Mouth open all the time
Talking back all the time

Past Houses
03:46
|

Passed shops with catchy little slogans
Passed shops where you buy back what was stolen
Passed shops where no one smiles at no one
Passed offices where windows do not open
Passed offices where men still dress Victorian
Passed offices with one true corporate vision
Keep going
Keep going now
Passed pubs where you tightly grip your wallet
Passed pubs so hateful you can feel it
Passed pubs where you don’t wanna use the toilet
Passed factories which never even open
Passed factories with every window broken
Passed factories that the crows just glare from
And we keep going
Keep going now
Keep going
Keep going now
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal in Victoria Quarter
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal in Victoria Quarter
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal
Passed schools that are weighed down by asbestos
Passed schools that are drained and passionless
Passed schools that are measured by blood loss
Passed houses that daylight never touches
Passed houses bunched up like rabbit hutches
Passed houses where your time is worth much less
And we keep going
Keep going now
Keep going
Keep going now
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal in Victoria Quarter
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
The anarchist sons of the government’s daughters
Quickly, quickly flock to the new bar
Act like a royal
We are cold

The Neutral Countries
03:25
|

On the top deck of the bus out of Beeston
Eyes drawn to the window smeared in something
Turns out its a pack-up left on the bus by
Some guy with sad eyes
Some school-kids had found it
Here we are the neutral countries
We’re born, we’re compromised and then we
Find somewhere to hide ‘til its all washed over us
Here we are, neutral countries
We are compromised and then we
Find somewhere to hide ‘til it washes over us
He is distracted (hence the lost pack-up)
Sat in the toilet at his workplace
Avoiding his duties
Left in the dark
‘Cause the light in the toilet is on some kind of timer
Here we are the neutral countries
We’re born, we’re compromised and then we
Find somewhere to hide ‘til its all washed over us
Here we are, neutral countries
We are compromised and then we
Find somewhere to hide ‘til it washes over us
We we’re never young
We saw the coat tails and grabbed on
We we’re never fun
We were empiricists to a man
We we’re never young
We saw the coat tails and grabbed on
Now he’s in the canteen replacing his pack-up
He might get a pasty or maybe a fry up
And though he chooses a seat with his back to the rest
They still involve him in the same conversations
Here we are the neutral countries
We’re born, we’re compromised and then we
Find somewhere to hide ‘til its all washed over us
Here we are, neutral countries
We are compromised and then we
Find somewhere to hide ‘til it washes over us
